Cancer is the plague of progress, because to a major extent it is the result of millions of chemicals in our air, food and water, including known and suspected carcinogens.
Theoretically, all cancers induced by environmental factors are preventable by the exercise of political will. The basic reason why they are permitted is patently obvious. In our social system economic values supersede human values, hotly and predictably disputed by industry and its captive advisors.
However, the environmental factor has been vigorously defended by many scientists such as Dr. Samuel Epstein, author of The Politics of Cancer.
In the US alone there are currently some one million cases of cancer with a death rate of just over 60 per cent. As The Cancer Conspiracy points out the cancer war is a lost one despite the billions of dollars spent on research and treatment.
In fact, if we consider the total social cost of cancer, it is clear that prevention would be far less costly. The trouble is that cancer treatment is a business and the private sector discounts social costs in favour of profits with the condonation and collusion of government.
Surely we cannot avoid making the charge of corporate crime for companies responsible for the release of carcinogens into our environment. Nor could we ever account for the human cost of suffering by patients and their loved ones.
Modern economics sinks to the very depths of inhumanity in that it uses synthetic cost accounting methods to put a price on morbidity and mortality. On the other hand, expensive treatment and diagnostic procedures produce billions of dollars of profits.
