Uses:  Butane is used as fuel for cigarette lighters and as a propellant in aerosol sprays such as deodorants.

Very pure forms of butane, especially iso-butane, can be used as refrigerants and have largely replaced the halomethanes, for instance in household refrigerators and freezers.

However, should there be an oxygen-deficient environment caused by release of a large quantity of Butane, especially in a confined space, a person may experience symptoms such as headache, ringing in the ears, dizziness, drowsiness, unconsciousness, nausea, vomiting and depression of all the senses.

Being confined to an oxygen-deficient environment for a prolonged period of time can even prove fatal.

Description: Butane gas is sold bottled as a fuel for cooking and camping. When blended with propane and other hydrocarbons, it is referred to commercially as Liquefied Petroleum Gas.

It is also used as a petrol component, as a feedstock for the production of base petrochemicals in steam cracking.
