Uses: Benzyl alcohol is mainly used in perfumes as a fragrance component, but is also used as a preservative, solvent and coatings on pharmaceutical drugs when mixed with polymers.
It has been seen to be mildly toxic in rats, and can result in respiratory failure, hypotension, convulsions and paralysis. It also is reported to cause skin allergies and toxicity and irritation to the eyes. There is also a question mark over the fact it could be carcinogenic.
