Uses:  An emulsifier and stabiliser Glycerol esters of wood rosin, is used in the soft drinks industry and mostly in Fanta flavoured drinks.


On short and long term studies on rats low level consumption showed no effects but higher levels showed changes in liver size and in some cases the dose was fatal.


High intakes may upset the calcium/phosphate equilibrium, headaches, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, diarrhoea, thirst, dizziness and mental confusion.




 


Description: Glycerol esters of wood rosin, glyceryl abietate, or Ester gum is a food additive used as an emulsifier and stabiliser, to keep oils in suspension in water. Obtained by solvent extraction using mostly methanol of pure stump wood (wood resin).
